Energy Management

Getting the most out of reducing energy use can only be achieved with the introduction of an Energy Management programme. Whilst an Energy Audit will identify measures for the programme, in itself, it won't save you a bean. It is only by instigating the findings, along with a Monitoring and Targeting scheme, and staff training, that those savings will arrive. One-off ad hoc measures may save the odd pound or two, but our experience shows that these gains may be lost unless a formal programme is implemented.

A formal Energy Management programme binds the energy aspects together.

Typically the components will be:

  • Energy Audit - Identifies areas for improvement.
  • Performance Indicators - Establishes your energy performance compared to others in your sector.
  • Monitoring and Targeting - Develops and implements an appropriate M&T scheme. This could be a simple spreadsheet or one of the dedicated packages.
  • Training - Essential for the success of any scheme, but often neglected.
  • Delegation of responsibility - There needs to be a reporting tree for energy. In a small firm this may well be a part time role, whereas larger companies may have a dedicated Energy Manager and site Energy Reps.
  • Reporting structure - Energy should be reported, and preferably up to board level.

All these can be bound together in a logical tree. (Click on image for a larger view.)
